Is there anything more American - or satisfying for carnivores - than a perfectly prepared and dressed cheeseburger? Even though South Walton is known best for the wide variety of fresh local seafood caught off the shore in the Gulf of Mexico and served up every which way - fried, grilled, broiled, blackened, steamed - South Waltoners love, and appreciate, a good burger, too from time to time.
So, what are web publisher Jill Gaupin's favorite spots for a Cheeseburger fix in South Walton? Here is the list:
JamBone Beachside Barbeque and Raw Bar [MAP IT]
The meat is a juicy blend of hormone and steroid free hand-ground chuck and brisket at this self-proclaimed "hardwood joint" in Santa Rosa Beach. By default, they cook your burger "medium" unless otherwise requested. The 6-oz patty is served with 2-slices of American cheese on a buttered kaiser roll also brushed with extra-virgin olive oil (mmmm) and grilled. Served with a generous portion of their famous spicy shoestring fries.
Seagrove Village Market Cafe [MAP IT]
This South Walton institution in the heart of Seagrove Beach serves up mammoth and juicy 1/2lb ground chuck burgers that are served on that other quintessential American favorite - the squishy, soft white bun with seeds - with all the fixins and a side of piping hot fries. Of note - the Seagrove Village Market Cafe burger won "Best Burger in South Walton" in 2008.
Caliza Restaurant [MAP IT]
Two words - Kobe Beef. Caliza Restaurant at Alys Beach offers American Kobe Beef Sliders - you know, those adorable little mini-burgers - that are really an epicurean thrill. These little juicy packets are served with Aged Cheddar Cheese, grilled onions and a delightful peppercorn sauce, and - another culinary treat you don't see much of in South Walton - a side of hand cut, homemade pommes frites.
Flip Flops Grill [MAP IT]
Fresh handmade Angus beef is used here as is Cheddar cheese. The patty is served on a chewy bun with good ole standard fries. They also offer a few creative burgers like the Southwest (pepper jack, chipolte mayo) and the Gorgonzola (gorgonzola cheese, bacon, spinach, magic mayo).
Cheeseburger in Paradise [MAP IT]
OK OK, I know. This is a chain restaurant but - with a company name that includes "Cheeseburger" - I can't deny that they really are burger masters. The patties are 100% ground chuck, cooked to preference (medium rare anyone?), American cheese and all the fixins'. It's served on a soft bun and a choice of a side (note: In my world, burgers MUST be consumed with fries and - by far not the best I've had - they still please here). Cheeseburger in Paradise also offers more creative palates selections like the Baja (sour cream, jalapenos, pepper jack and salsa) and the Blue Cheese Blast (lightly melted blue cheese, fried onion strings and Asian mayo).
Summer Kitchen Cafe [MAP IT]
Summer Kitchen Cafe was voted "Best Burger in South Walton" for 2009 by SouthWaltonScene.com readers which is a definite nod of approval for a good burger in our neck of the woods. I must confess - I haven't tried this Cheeseburger YET. When I do (soon!), I will report back.
